چکیده

In this paper we present a novel abstraction layer above the well-known triangular 1-to-4 split subdivision based on hexagons. This approach allows adaptive bidirectional subdivision, that is refinement and coarsening of the mesh, without causing problems like irregular refinement or hanging nodes. Thus it is feasible to adapt the mesh resolution locally, according to geometric features, viewing parameters and error bounds. Our method does neither rely on time-consuming preprocessing nor hierarchical data structures, which yields to low memory consumption. We show, how our technique can be applied to terrain rendering of huge data sets, where we achieve interactive frame rates using hexagonal subdivision.

Interactive distributed hardware-accelerated LOD-sprite terrain rendering with stable frame rates

A stable frame rate is important for interactive rendering systems. Image-based modeling and rendering (IBMR) techniques, which model parts of the scene with image sprites, are a promising technique for interactive systems because they allow the sprite to be manipulated instead of the underlying scene geometry. However, with IBMR techniques a frequent problem is an unstable frame rate, because ...

Geometry-based Mapping and Rendering of Vector Data over LOD Phototextured 3D Terrain Models

Interactive three-dimensional (3D) visualization of very large-scale grid digital elevation models coupled with corresponding high-resolution remote-sensing phototexture images is a hard problem. The graphics load must be controlled by an adaptive view-dependent surface triangulation and by taking advantage of different levels of detail (LODs) using multiresolution modeling of terrain geometry....

GPU-optimized efficient quad-tree based progressive multiresolution model for interactive large scale terrain rendering

This paper presents new effective method for real-time terrain triangulation and visualization. The method utilizes compact progressive terrain representation which is constructed at preprocess stage and requires a very low memory expense. This representation allows easily LOD extraction at runtime. In contrast to previous works our quadtree-based triangulation is not restricted such that neigh...

Overview of Quadtree-based Terrain Triangulation and Visualization

Real-time rendering and multiresolution modeling of triangulated surfaces has attracted growing interest over the last decade. For interactive visualization of very large scale grid digital elevation models efficiency is a particularly important aspect. The graphics rendering load must be controlled by reducing the number of rendered primitives using level-of-detail (LOD) techniques, adaptive e...

Multiresolution BSP Trees Applied to Terrain, Transparency, and General Objects

We present a system for incorporating multiple level of detail (LOD) models of 3D objects within a single hierarchical data structure. This system was designed for a scientific visualization application involving terrain and volume rendering. Our data structure is a modified Binary Space Partitioning (BSP) tree. We describe how our tree construction and traversal routines may be used with a var...
